History of Chelmsford Golf Club
The first nine hole course on Galleywood Common used the existing Horse and Groom public house as a club house. The present course was formed on parcels of land acquired over the years but started in 1910 on land originally leased from Sir David Gooch. When the move took place a new club house was constructed on the present site at a cost of £400! This building has been enlarged and modified (and modernised) to form the present changing rooms, dinning facilities and administrative offices.
Following numerous changes the current course layout was formed in 1936 following the sale of land to the County Council for the building of St. John's Hospital and the concurrent acquisition of Thrift Wood. The present hospital site has recently been sold for a housing development.
In recent years the club has enjoyed success in many county and national competitions including notable wins in the Thornton Cup, Leslie Wood and the Men’s Seniors whilst the Ladies have excelled in the Harris Bowl, Bronze Trophy, Silver Trophy and currently hold the record of winning the Silver Shield six times in succession.
The 5996 yard par 68 course is always in excellent condition and a warm welcome always awaits the visitor or member in the clubhouse. Last updated - 20th Jan 2009 |
