Chelmsford Golf Club              

History

 

     - Chelmsford Golf Club was formally constituted on May 4th 1893.  

     - The original nine hole course was set out ‘among the furze and bracken’ on Galleywood common.

     - The first ‘club house’ was the Horse and Groom public house which remains on the common.

     - In 1910 land was leased in Widford from Sir David Gooch for a new  18 hole course.  

     - New course opened June 22nd 1911.  

     - Chelmsford GC is the eleventh oldest in the County.  

     - Over the years various parcels of land were bought and the course was changed to its present layout.  

     - The original club house on this site was constructed in 1911 at a cost of £400.  

     - The clubhouse has been enlarged and revised several times over the years.

     - In 1936 the county council purchased part of the then existing course in order to extend St. John's Hospital .

     - The hospital site has recently been sold for a housing development.
